"I love the educational atmosphere. It's great to learn from folks who are eager to learn themselves. Their ability to relate their experiences to the course material was really effective."

Ben: A Prototype for Democracy in the 21st Century

Presented by Dave Wolf.

“ben” is a series of interconnected, cross-platform applications that leverage the power of Microsoft Silverlight, Windows Presentation Foundation, Live Services, Twitter and VoIP technologies. “ben” is also the recent winner of the Microsoft sponsored PhizzPop competition — a National Design and Development Challenge — where 30 of the top interactive agencies in the country competed on a regional and national level to determine the best of the best. “ben” was created by Cynergy Systems which won the National Finals of PhizzPop by unanimous decision at South by Southwest Interactive.

“ben,” named for Benjamin Franklin, captivated the PhizzPop crowd of over 500 attendees with a dizzying array of features. The pinnacle of the event occurred when the Cynergy team placed a call to Senator Barack Obama from their Silverlight Facebook application, which used VoIP technology, and left a message that said “Hello from SXSW” on the Obama campaign’s answering machine. At PhizzPop, “ben” demonstrated Cynergy’s proven LookFirst approach to UX-centric design and how it can solve even the most challenging of business problems. The creation of “ben” also underscored the very real impact strong design can have on commercial software.

In this session, Dave will take you through a tour of “ben” and discuss the challenges that were raised and overcome during the unique PhizzPop competition.
